Cylinders

What it's for

Reference tables of cylinders, plus free-gas capacity and tank factor helpers. Look a cylinder up by id in CYLINDERS_BY_ID, or iterate DIVE_CYLINDERS, STORAGE_CYLINDERS and INDUSTRIAL_CYLINDERS.

Formulas

Ideal free gas, in surface litres:

Vfree=VwPgauge

Real free gas, using the ideal-equivalent pressure from Real gas:

Vfree=Vw(Pideal(Pgauge+1.01325)−1.01325)

Tank factor, cubic feet of free gas per 100 psi:

TF=100Vw28.3168466×14.5037738
  • Vw: cylinder water volume, L. Pgauge: gauge pressure, bar.
  • Pideal: ideal-equivalent absolute pressure, bar.
  • Vfree: free gas, surface litres. TF: cu ft per 100 psi.

Nominal vs real cubic feet

A cylinder's "cubic feet" rating (80 for an AL80) is a nominal free-gas figure, and it does not match what the cylinder holds at its rated pressure.

An AL80 has a water volume of 11.1 L and a service pressure of 3000 psi (206.8 bar). The ideal formula gives 11.1×206.84=2296 L, or about 81.1 cu ft. With real-gas behaviour at that pressure the cylinder holds about 77.9 cu ft, which is why an AL80 is closer to 77 cu ft than 80. Pass useRealGas: true to freeGas to get the real figure.

Tables

Water volume is the internal volume. Rated pressure is the service pressure in bar gauge, converted from psi where the source uses psi.

Assumptions and limits

  • Free gas is above 0 gauge, so it is volume × pressure in the ideal case, not absolute.
  • Tank factor is unrounded and ideal.
  • Real-gas free gas defaults to AIR. Pass gas for other mixes.
  • The real-gas model is valid to 500 bar absolute.
